Gurpurab Clothes Drive 2013 - Over 1000 'Black Bags' Collected

Vaheguru ji Ka Khalsa, Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh,

On Sunday 17th November to the mark the Gurpurab (birth date) of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj, the Sikh community of Leicester along with the Leicestershire Sikh Alliance, Kaurageous Leicester and Guru Tegh Bahadur Gurdwara teamed up with charities, Action Homeless, Rainbows Hospice and Unique Home for Girls to hold a clothes drive.

The first Sikh Guru was a social reformer and a spiritual guide for Sikhs. He blessed Sikhs with key principles such as a belief in One God, equality, selfless service, earning an honest living, sharing with and caring for humanity.

A spokesman for the Leicestershire Sikh Alliance said, “The community would like to fulfil Sri Guru Nanak Dev Jee’s message to selflessly serve humanity by supporting the benefactor charities”.

These three charities are carrying out vital work to help children suffering from terminal illness (Rainbows Hospice), women and children who have been left homeless as a result of domestic violence (Action Homeless) and abandoned girls (Unique Home for Girls).

Over 1000 'black bin bags' worth of clothes were collected on the day, which roughly equates to 9 tonnes, based on long wheel based van loads.

All in all the day was a huge success and the Sikh community would like to thank all those that volunteered and donated on the day, which included people of all backgrounds and communities. It was also great to see Rt Hon Nicky Morgan MP attend, donate and support the event.

On a mission - Khalsa Bikers Roll into Town

On Wednesday 17th July at 11am, Leicester’s Sikh community welcomed the charitable motorcycling club called the KHALSA BIKERS.  It proved to be a marvellous sight to witness the 20-strong, Turban clad Sikh motorcycle enthusiasts with long flowing open beards roar up to East Midlands largest Sikh Gurdwara – ‘Guru Tegh Bahadar Gurdwara’ on East Park Road Leicester.

Leicester was the second stop on a 5 day, ‘Route 13’ named Charity tour of 13 towns and cities across Great Britain. Leicester’s Sikhs have been raising money in anticipation of the club’s arrival and hope to add to the £25k the club have raised since their inception in 2011.

Beneficiaries of Route 13 Tour include Khalsa Aid - the Humanitarian relief agency currently looking after shaheed parvaars and active in the North India floods disaster area – this crisis has claimed lives of 800 with thousands missing. A further 250K people have been displaced.

Leicestershire Sikh Alliance spokesperson said “We are privileged that Leicester has been chosen on their current Route 13 tour, and the way these guys have fused their passion for motorcycling with fund raising is inspiring for all”

Mr Surinderpal Singh Rai (General Secretary of Gurdwara) said “We hope that all the well-wishers who came to support on the day enjoyed the spectacle and we trust Khalsa Bikers have a safe journey onwards and we thank them for highlighting the plight of others in such an extraordinary fashion “
